Which car seat do you think is the safest?
I’ve been looking at Britax, Chicco, Graco, Safety First and I can’t decide which one I like best. So I’m asking the parents out there, which car seat do you think is the safest? Please no rude answers, thank you.
The car seat that is the safest is one that fits very tightly in your car, is appropriate for your child’s weight/height, and one that is properly installed.
If it’s not tight, it’s not safe, period. You should NOT be able to move the car seat forward or back or side to side when it’s installed. If you can move it, it’s not safe. Some seats simply don’t fit well in some models of cars.
All seats have to meet certain standards, but some score higher than others. It’s just like cars…they have to meet certain standards, but some surpass those standards while others just scrape by.
When my sister bought her car seat, she bought one that had great safety ratings (it was a Britax), but she simply couldn’t get it in her car tightly. However, it fit well in my car. She had to buy a different seat. It doesn’t matter what ratings it got because if you can’t get it in your car tightly, it’s not safe.
Be sure to read the instruction manual that comes with it THOROUGLY. For instance, if you car is not equipped with the latch system (or that doesn’t hold it tightly enough) and you need to use the regular seat belt to secure the seat, most of the time you need to use a locking clip. So many parents don’t even know what one is simply because they didn’t read the manual.
And make sure you are installing it properly according to the manual. If it’s a convertible seat (can be rear-facing or forward-facing) that doesn’t mean you can just put it however you want. A baby should not forward face until they are BOTH at least one year old AND at least 20 lbs. If your child is over 20 lbs but not a year old yet, he needs to stay rear-facing until he is at least a year.
But it’s safest to keep them rear-facing for as long as your car seat allows. You may want to consider getting one that can stay rear facing to higher weight limits. My child was nearly two years old before she hit the weight limit on rear-facing in her convertible seat.
Also, if you can, put the seat in the middle of the back seat. This keeps the baby away from all points of impact in a crash. If you have other children though, this may not be possible.
