Infant car seat designed for small trucks?
Do you know of any infant car seats designed for smaller trucks? I’m not sure what my brother drives… it’s a small chev. Are there any companies that make a seat specific for this kind of vehicle?
It has an airbag, so the front seat isn’t an option. There is a back seat as the truck is a four door. I’m just wondering if there is a smaller profile seat available.
Well….my first suggestion would be to drive the child in something else. Sounds incredibly extreme, but small trucks are incredibly unsafe for children to be in, so if another option can be made, that is better.
Sometimes, there is just no other option. If there truly isn’t, I would just limit the amount of time the child spends in the vehicle, as he will be much safer in another one. Depending upon the backseat, you may have to place the child seat in the front. Some small truck’s back seats are so tiny that you can’t even fit the seat in the back to install!

In that case, the airbag will need to be shut off for a car saet to be placed in the front. If its a 2001 or newer model, it should have button to shut the airbag off, or, in some very new models, it will have a sensor that recognizes when the person is under a certain weight and deactivates the airbag. A little light on the dash should go on/off to signify this. If its older than that, it will need to be taken to a mechanic to get the airbag shut off. Of course, that means that it is off for any other passenger who rides, too, since its not a particularly easy thing to shut on and off when there’s not a dash button to do so.
In a small truck I would actually recommend trying a convertible car seat instead of a carrier, b/c they can actually take up less space. Infant carrier seats tend to take up more space b/c most of them require that you put the handle in the down position while in the car, which adds and extra 1-2 inches to the front back measurement of the child seat. A convertible seat doesn’t have a handle, so no problem there. For a newborn, the best bet is probably a Cosco Scenera only $45 at Walmart/Kmart/Target and some other stores, its about as inexpensive as it gets, but makes a really great rear facing seat. That’s b/c it goes to 35lbs rear facing, and will keep most kids rear facing to about 18-24 months old, important since the AAP and other experts say to keep kids rear facing as long as possible, to the limits of a rear facing covnertible, preferably for the first 2 years of life. The Scenera doesn’t make a great forward facing seat, as it only goes to 40lbs, and most kids outgrow it before they reach 40lbs, most kids will outgrow it at 2-3 years old b/c of the really short top harness slots. But it fits a newborn well, and that would give time to perhaps figure out another solution to transporting a baby that would be safer than a small truck.
So, there are not specific seats for small trucks, and most infant carrier seats are pretty similar in size. The truth is that there just may not be a solution to transporting a child in this vehicle, though you can try.
WHY REAR FACING:
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child’s life!
1)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
2)A child’s vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
3)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
4)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)
It works this way: when you get in an accident and run into something, the car stop suddently, but everything and everyone in the car keeps moving in the direction the car was moving when it stopped, in most accidents, this is forward. So in an accident with a child in a forward facing seat, his head, the heaviest part of the body on babies and toddlers, flies forward very forcefully and easily snaps. If that same child is in a rear facing seat, his head tries to fly forward but is supported by the back of the rear facing seat, so there is no stress put on the child’s neck and spine.

There are, however, lots of cases where children have been killed and seriously injured where a rear facing seat would have protected them better.
