Question about convertible carseats?

Our baby is going to be too big for her current carseat very soon. It’s designed for a baby up to 22 pounds and she’s just over 20 pounds now (and to think, when we bought it we thought the carseat would be good for up to a year…little did we know that our 6-month old would be 20 pounds!)…..anyway..I’m on the verge of exploring which seat we need to purchase next. Before I start looking, I’m curious to know if we’re going to have to buy two more bases for our two cars or do convertible seats come ready-to-install? OR, are we going to have to purchase TWO seats? ouch! They look like they’re kind of pricey!

Convertible car seats do not have bases, they go straight in the car either with the latch system or with the seat belt. We bought two because I think they are a pain to move in and out of vehicles, especially when they are rear facing.

When you put a convertible car seat rear facing, you often have to put a rolled up towel or a pool noodle underneath the front of it to get the recline right so baby’s head isn’t flopping forward. The recline needs to be between 30-45 degrees, and in most cars, they need to be adjusted. If you have a LATCH system, it’s safest to install the car seat using that, but becomes a bit of a pain when you are dealing with the latch, the recline, making it tight enough, etc. Once we got our carseat in, I haev not taken it out lol. I do not even want to mess with getting it all set up again!

We bought the Britax Roundabout for my car. It’s a little pricey ($199, but on sale for $176 at this link with free shipping http://www.amazon.com/Britax-Roundabout-Convertible-Car-Seat/dp/B001E5CE22/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1242153137&sr=8-1) but it has great safety ratings and can stay rear facing until 35 pounds, which is great. We use the Evenflo Titan in daddy’s car, which was less money, and since he doesn’t use it as often I saw no reason to go top of the line.
