car seat rules

car seat rules
What if your car has no seat belts? can you drive it?

I have a 1965 corvair 4 dr hardtop. And i’m lucky and not so lucky. About 1,000 corvairs in 1965 did not got seat belts. I want to know if you can legally drive the car. I don’t want to get a ticket. So any one know the rule on cars without seat belts?
I want to know if you can drive the car without seat belts ( USA ) Car is completely original down to the paint. Only 20k miles.
Currently the car is registured and insured in michigan.
The car has an Historical Plate. And a certificate as an classic car.

The way you describe it, it IS legal. back in the 50’s and 60’s seat belts were optional equipment. NOT mandatory.

Its like asking ” Do I need to equip my car with shoulder straps or air bags?”

If the car was built in 1965, and it was built to conform to standards in affect in 1965, then those standards apply. You cannot modify anything to conform to future standards.

Case in point— if your car had air bags installed, and then you took them off or disabled them, you fail inspection, If the car never had airbags it passes.

Of course, you can modify the car and install seat belts, but that would take about $10,000 off the price of the car.

And if it has historical plates on it, you should not routinely be driving the car.

Dashcam records dramatic rescue
A Warsaw family is counting their blessings after a near tragic accident at a pond over the weekend. Their car rolled into the water and a seven-year-old was trapped when a door pinned her down.  When police arrived, the dashcam from the squad car caught the audio of the rescue.
