Is it possible to install mirrors in a car that would get rid of the blind spot?
I asked my brother to walk around the car with a mirror in his hand while I sat in the driver’s seat.
He just blinked at me.
But I’m curious! It seems doable.
A good question. I’m a physics graduate but my optics is just mediocre. There’s an optics principle which says if I can see you, you can see me. One-way mirrors aren’t really that; they rely on the fact that if you’re in a brightly-lit room on a dark night without the curtains drawn, a prowler outside can see you but you can’t see him; the reflected image you see on the inside blots out the view outside, just like the glare of an oncoming car’s headlights blinds you at night.
The answer to your question is nope. You may have driven behind trucks with a sign on the back saying if you can’t see my rear vision mirrors, I can’t see you. This is correct. The only way to eliminate the blind spot (it’s more than a spot; even a school bus can be invisible) is a TV camera at the rear of your car and a screen on your dashboard.
