2 car seats next to each other? Is this possible?
I have a 2-year old and 5 month old. My 5-month old will grow out of her infant car seat soon so I need a new car seat.
We currently have a Britax Decathlon installed forward-facing for a 2 year old. We think we could put baby in Decathlon rear-facing in the center in our SUV (Land Rover Range Rover) and buy a new car seat for 2 year old to be placed right next to it. But can we possibly place another car seat to be installed forward facing right next to it? Decathlon is a bulky car seat. I could possibly put Decathlon behind passenger’s seat rear-facing so we can have enough space to put the other car seat on the opposite side, but I’m afraid if I do this, I will have no space to sit in passenger’s side.
I really like Decathlon except when I try to put my 2-year old into it, I have to be careful that I don’t bump her head against the ceiling of the car (the base is pretty high).
For those with two babies, what car seats do you have in the car(SUV)? Where are they installed?
It might work, depending upon which seat you get for the 2 year old. If you get a low profile seat, that is, one that sits right on the vehicle seat with no base, it may fit perfectly right under the high sides of the Decathalon.
However – contrary to popular opinion, its not the youngest who belongs in the middle, unless you’re doing it strictly b/c there’s no room for it to be rear facing behind the driver or passenger seat. CPSTs (car seat techs) say to put the least protected child in the most protected position. In your case, the least protected child is your 2 year old – b/c she is forward facing. The most protected position is the middle. So the 2 year old should be in the middle, and the baby outboard.
However, some people must put the rear facing seat in the middle to allow the driver/passenger enough room in the front seat. I would use the Decathalon for the baby, and check out these seats for the 2 year old:
Sunshine Kids Radian65/Radian80. The Radian65 and Radian80 are the exact same seat – just one is tested to 65lbs and one is tested to 80lbs. So that means its really not worth the money for the 80 – no kid is going to get to 80lbs in the seat before outgrowing it by height first! This seat can be difficult to install, but its a great seat, low profile, fits perfectly right next to a Decathalon. The Radian65 keeps most kids harnessed to 6-7 years old. And then you’d need to purchase a booster seat. Under $200, if you buy it at Walmart.com you can return it in store if it doesn’t work in your vehicle.
Graco Nautilus, $150 – harnesses to 65lbs then becomes a booster, so likely the last seat you’ll need to buy for your 2 year old. GREAT seat, steel reinforced, easy to use, easy to install, keeps most kids harnessed to about 7 years old.
Britax Frontier – $279 – harnesses to 80lbs and then becomes a booster. Britax quality and comfort that can’t be beat, would be more like what you’re used to with your current seat. Harness never has to be rethreaded, so its easy to change heights, and unlike other harnessed booster/combo seats, the arm rests flip up so the child can get in and out easily. Very comfy seat.
Britax Regent $269 – will keep your child harnessed longer than any other seat, harnesses to 80lbs, with 20″ top slots, keep most kids harnessed to 8-10 years old. I have personally installed my son’s Regent right next to his Marathon (same shell as Decathalon) fits well. But it is a VERY wide seat, so if you need 3 seats across, this may not work for you. You would then need to buy a booster after your child outgrows the harness.
