Installing a Britax Boulevard Car seat?
My husband and I just purchased a Britax Boulevard car seat for our 7 month old. You know how learning to install a new car seat goes…I am totally confused. We are going to use the latches to install it. Do we still need to use the seat belt? I am not sure how the manual reads. I am not sure if it’s an either or, or use both. Does anyone know what I am talking about?
Use either LATCH or seatbelt NEVER use both together. As a previous poster mentioned, many vehicles don’t have LATCH in the middle position. If you car only has 4 LATCH points (2 on each side) its likely you can’t use LATCH in the middle. LATCH is not safer than seatbelts, either, its supposed to make car seat installation more universal and easier (though it doesn’t!). Use whichever gives the best install. Sometimes the LATCH anchor points are too far apart or too narrow to install with a seat well. These rules are the same whether the seat is forward facing or rear facing.
If you are using LATCH, make sure the LATCH straps are on the right sides (should have come installed for rear facing, but check to make sure). On a Britax convertible seat, the LATCH system is 2 separate straps, each connected to the metal bar on the seat – they have labels on them for which side they’re supposed to be used on, and have to be changed for forward facing. (i.e. there is a Left LATCH strap and a right LATCH strap)

Good choice of a seat, btw, it will help keep your child safer longer b/c of the higher weight limits. Having said that, keep your baby rear facing AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! Turning babies forward facing at 1 yr/20lbs is outdated advice that could cost you your baby’s life. A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 4 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age. A child’s vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
Once you turn your child forward facing (preferably after 2 years of age and 33lbs rear facing limit of the Boulevard), keep him in a 5 point harness as long as possible – until he reaches the 65lbs weight limit of the Boulevard or until his shoulders are above the top slots.
