car seats best position in car?
i have a 6 week old baby we are goin off on saturday and there will be 4 adults in the car i heard that the best place is in the middle of the back seat but the car only has the old style lap belt not a full seat belt would this be ok for the car seat or should she go near the door if its ok in the middle should it go round the back of the seat or across her front
I answered a similar question a few days ago on the same subject…
For the obvious safety aspect, it’s best to has the infant in the middle of the car, this reduces risks from a collision from any side as they are as far away from any external part of the car… I would say that it would be better to use one of the 3 point seat belts if you only have a lap belt in the middle…
Child seats are designed to fit the car using the existing seat belt and the child is secured in by the safety seats own built in 5 or 6 point safety harness…
For Uk requirements & The Law the following applies
All children under 135cm (4ft 5in) tall, unless they have passed their 12th birthday, must use a child seat appropriate for their weight.
Up to 13kg (2st 1lb) – A Rear-Facing Baby Seat
9kg to 18kg (1st 6lb – 2st 12lb) – A Forward-Facing Child Seat
15kg to 25kg (2st 5lb – 3st 13lb) -A Booster Seat
22kg (3st 6lb) or above – A Booster Cushion, or modern Booster Seat designed for larger children
A couple more points to note are
Children under 12 and less than 135cm tall may not travel in the front of a car without an appropriate seat or cushion, under any circumstances.
Children under three may not travel without an appropriate seat, whether they are in the front or the back, except in the rear of a taxi.
