At what age or weight do kids don’t have to use a car seat in the state of california?

According to California law:

*Up to 1 year old AND (not or) up to 20 pounds: child must sit in a rear-facing safety seat.

*1-4 years old AND 20-40 pounds: child must sit in a forward-facing safety seat.

*4-6 years old AND 40-60 pounds: child must sit in a booster seat.

Many child safety advocates also recommend keeping children in booster seats until they reach 80 pounds and 49″ (4′ 1″) tall.

Of course, this applies only while the children are riding in cars.
