car seat supports

Which type of car seat?
My 19 month old (25 pounds, 32 inches) is in a convertible car seat which expires next year. Since he’ll need to be in a 5 point harness after that, I’m wanting to get him a new car seat soon. What type of seat do you recommend? I don’t know if it would be best to get a high backed booster that uses the harness to 40 pounds then acts as a booster after that, or if it would be best to get a seat that supports harness use to a higher weight. What do you suggest?
Is it really beneficial to get a convertible seat when he won’t be using it rear facing? A booster/harness combo keeps a baby in a 5 point harness from 20-40 pounds.
I remember reading that toddlers shouldn’t go into those booster seats until at least the age of 3 (even the ones with the 5 point harness) something about the safety in a crash with younger occupants.
I could be wrong, I will keep looking for that link.
ETA: I can’t find it….maybe I am wrong..who knows : )
Anyways, looking at Babies R Us, it doesn’t seem like that there is that many 5 point harness seats to choose from. And the ones with the highest costumer ratings of course, are the expensive ones.
