Is securing a car seat in the middle seat of a vehicle with just a lap belt not safe enough?

Is securing a car seat in the middle seat of a vehicle with just a lap belt not safe enough? Should the car seat be moved to a window seat that has the shoulder belt AND lap belt?

If you prefer to use the tether/latch system, are you not supposed to use the vehicle’s seat belts? Can you use both the lap belt and latch/tether?

Do *not* use both the lap belt and latch. The seat was not safety tested installed this way and there is a good chance they can work against each other in an accident.

The *only* thing a lap belt *can* safely secure is a car seat. A passenger is safer with a lap and shoulder belt… but the carseat is fine with the lap belt alone.

If you have a tether anchor and secure it according to the directions it does add some extra protection… but most seats have passed safety testing without a tether. Unless your directions require the tether the seat can be safely installed with just the lap belt alone.
