So You’re Going to Have Your First Child – What All is There to Plan for?
You have survived nine months of pregnancy, and painful hours of labor, and now it is finally time to bring your newborn home. You have been dreaming about this moment for so long that you likely feel sure that you have thought of every possible contingency. However, there is inadvertently something unexpected that comes up or a detail you’re wishing someone had brought up before. Following you’ll find 7 aspects you should know when preparing for the arrival of your first child.
Plan for loose fitting clothes for the trip home. Most parents fret about how to dress baby for her trip home, but a number fail to plan accurately for themselves. A brand new mommy’s body has recently been through an impactful event. Her body will feel sore and aching for some length of time, and she will retain some “baby weight.” The chances of all skin and muscle eventually returning to pre-pregnancy appearance are low, let alone just after delivering a baby. Of course this is not always considered a problem, it just tells you that your old outfits will not fit the same. So, bring spacious, easy to put on, ensembles that feel comfortable and comforting. You have lots of time to work your way back into skinny jeans, so just don’t fret over that now.
Ask about your child’s first doctor’s appointment prior to leaving the hospital. The first appointment is usually a week after birth, but be certain you have marked down precisely when.
Ask the hospital staff. You will have a million questions as soon as the baby is born. You possibly feel a little foolish to ask, but the hospital staff wants you to ask questions. No matter how unusual your concerns may be, go ahead and ask. After all, it is smarter to know than to keep quiet and stay ignorant.
Have the baby seat in the car early. Put the safety harness in leisurely when you can afford enough time to adjust it until it is secure. If you need help, check with the hospital or check with the local fire department. Most of the time, they take the time to help you make sure the seat is safe.
Prepare for an emotional overload. Of course, you will be overjoyed with your newborn. However, you will also be overwhelmed, exhausted, frustrated, short-tempered, impatient, depressed, and scared. That is what happens. Between the hormonal changes taking place in your body and the huge life-change occurring in your life, it is healthy to experience several separate emotions at the same time. But, if melancholy and anger are impacting your life or do not go away, consult your doctor. Post-partum depression is a serious thing and should always be handled as quickly as possible.
Try to rest at any time the baby goes to sleep. Many times, new parents push their bodies and attempt to use baby’s nap time for unfinished household chores. They think that the dishes should be taken care of and catching a nap is a luxury. Now seriously, paper plates are ok, and sleep is a requirement. You will not be an effective parent if you are worn out to exhaustion. Therefore, take the benefits of the child’s sleepiness, and settle in for a nap too.
Plan on a bouncy seat or swing. Of all the useful baby items in the universe, one of the most overlooked is the bouncy chair. Say you need to tend to an immediate mess, or really need to take a few moments to yourself. A bouncy swing allows you those few moments, even when the baby is awake.
These are just a few of the unexpected stuff to prepare for when planning to bring your new child home. Ask friends and family members who are moms and dads what they wish someone had told them prior to the arrival of their first son or daughter. And most important of all, believe in yourself. When your family is safe, fed and healthy, anything more is just a wonderful extra!
