What is a good inexpensive car?

I’m selling my 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T w/ exhaust and cold air intake, and it’s eating away at me. I need to for financial reasons in starting a family, but I can only afford up to a $3000 car. This might be a matter of opinion, but I would like something that throws you back in your seat with acceleration, and a decent track record.
I’ve considered a Saab 900, Subaru, older Mustang, but need suggestions.
I’ll be driving it to and from school, and work. My work fortunately is only two blocks away, and school is about 7 miles by freeway. I also have a buddy I visit a couple times a month. My wife has an 04 Honda Civic, and our child is 2 and a half. This won’t be much more than a commuter car for myself.

If you are getting rid of your car for financial reasons. Why would the Saab, or Subaru be in you list? Both cars are expensive to maintain…
