Don’t you think first 10 years of your life has great influence on your personality and behavior ?

I strongly think so. The events you have seen , the experiences through which you have gone, the impact of all direct and indirect learning , your grooming and upbringing by parents , teachers , society has ever lasting impact on your personality , attitudes and behavior patterns. Unfortunately although psychiatrists admit this , they do not get into so much of depth while analysing and diagnosing the problematic cases. Do you agree that impact caused by first 10 years of your life is virtually irreversible ?

I agree that the first ten years has great influence of personality and behavior. But we are more than personality and behavior, we are also physical, spiritual and emotional creatures.

Traditionally, psychiatry, psychology and science agree that the first 5 years are the most critical to personality and developmental formation, not 10.

I could agree that by about 12 to 13 years old a childs personality, character, behavioral, and emotional patterns are nearly solidified. And virtually irreversible without intervention of some kind. Most esxperience an intervention that is life changing, others fill the prisons if the first 12-13 years were continually abusive and violent.

Children are still vulnerable and impressionable throughout their teens and it is possible to impact them, and it is a sad human being that doesn’t learn something new every day for the rest of our lives. We grow physically, emotionally and spiritually and our behavior changes.

Psychiatrists routinely diagnose based on symptoms, behaviors, and complaints (physical, psychological or sexual abuse), and if possible, a school, social, family, and other history (put in foster care, father’s an alcoholic etc) and adjustment problems. All he has is a few people to tell him what’s going on, maybe a referral, maybe some diagnostic test scores, and a counselor’s writeup; but not usually, usually just the kid and one parent or caseworker. He’s so familiar with all the routine diagnosis, he doesn’t need much more than that to be accurate. Treatment is very much the same anyway: medication, counseling, behavioral or talk therapy, maybe meditation practices for extreme anxiety disorders.

Psychologists are the talkers and investigators and will love to delve deeper.
